I looked high and low for accessible therapists. When I looked for therapists who knew American Sign Language, I found a few, but they were too far of a drive from me. I tried to find therapists who would book American Sign Language interpreters, but they told me that I would have to pay for them myself. When I asked if they would then accommodate via writing/typing, I didn't get much of a response. Mental illness is a serious problem for deaf people, whether it's mainstreamed deaf or culturally deaf. It's a topic that seems to not be talked about often, which is a shame because we are so prone to it because of the oppression we face on a regular basis. The lack of accessible therapy does not help. Thankfully, BetterHelp is a (not the ultimate, but at least one) option that can be suitable for a percentage of deaf people. This is because you can use instant messaging, texting (in the chat), etc. to receive sessions. So far, it has worked for me when nothing else will. I would still love to be able to find a more face-to-face solution, but until then, something like BetterHelp works for me.
