9 Ways to Choose Love by Willie Greene ( @wetheurban) in ASL
To choose self-love is to choose power. To choose healing is to choose resistance. Self-love is more than self-care—it is reclaiming your worth, setting boundaries, and honoring yourself unapologetically. Inspired by @wetheurban’s ‘9 Ways to Choose Love,’ this video is a reminder that choosing yourself is an act of strength, especially in a world that tells you otherwise. Save this for when you need the reminder. Comment below: Which way are you choosing self-love today? #selfloveisresistance #healingispower #kissfisttourney #blackhistorymonth #9waystochooselove #radicalselflove”* Transcript: [Opening Scene] “To choose self-love is to choose yourself in a world that tells you not to. Self-love is not just about self-care—it’s about reclaiming your worth, your time, and your energy. It is resistance.” “Inspired by 9 Ways to Choose Love by @wetheurban, here’s how choosing love can be an act of self-love and empowerment.” 1. Own Your Weird “Choosing self-love means choosing to be fully yourself. Embrace your quirks. Your authenticity is your superpower.” 2. Tell Fear to Take Several Seats “Fear will always be there, whispering doubts. But self-love means choosing courage over comfort, knowing you are capable.” 3. Read the Room “Not every space is meant for you. Protect your energy. Self-love means choosing environments where you feel valued.” 4. Focus on the Present “Healing isn’t about erasing the past—it’s about learning from it and staying present in your journey.” 5. Romanticize Reality, Not Fantasy “Self-love isn’t about waiting for the perfect life—it’s about loving the one you have now. Joy is found in the smallest moments.” 6. Delete the Ex-Files “Letting go is an act of love. For yourself. Release what no longer serves you—physically, emotionally, digitally.” 7. Let Go of ‘Winning’ Arguments “Love is not about being right. It’s about being free. Self-love teaches you to choose peace over pride.” 8. Practice Loving Yourself “How you treat yourself sets the standard for how the world treats you. Self-love is a daily practice, not a destination.” 9. Take Off the Armor “Being guarded might feel safe, but it can also keep you isolated. Self-love is allowing yourself to be seen, as you are.” [Closing Scene] “To choose self-love is to choose healing. To choose love is to choose resistance. You are worthy of love—especially from yourself.” “Inspired by 9 Ways to Choose Love by @wetheurban.”

What is Therapy?
What is Therapy? A Conversation Between a Therapist and a Curious Mind In this informative video, two counselors from My Deaf Therapy come together for a conversation that explores what therapy is all about. One plays the role of a therapist, while the other, a non-therapist, asks common questions about therapy out of curiosity. If you've ever wondered what therapy involves, who can benefit from it, or how it can help, this video provides clear and approachable answers. The counselor playing the therapist addresses essential questions such as: • What exactly is therapy? • Who can therapy help? • What happens during a therapy session, and is what I share confidential? • How can therapy support emotional and mental well-being? • Is therapy only for those with diagnosed mental health issues, or can anyone benefit from it? Through this dialogue, the video highlights the many ways therapy can improve lives, offering reassurance and practical insights for anyone considering therapy or wanting to learn more. Whether you're new to therapy or simply curious, this conversation provides an easy-to-understand overview of the process. A-B-C (Alphabet) Exploration Mindfulness Activity in ASL
The Alphabet Exploration (ABC) Mindfulness Activity is a popular and simple way to quickly bring your attention to the present and learn self-awareness skills. We hope you find this to be a fairly easy practice to learn. Once you get the hang of it, we encourage you to practice being grounded. With ongoing distractions from media, electronics, and demands on our time, it's easy to lose sight of ourselves and our present being. This ABC Exploration Mindfulness activity helps you learn to take a pause and notice your body's sensations. You are guided through a straightforward exercise in acknowledging your present surroundings. This halting of chaos allows you to pause and notice your body's sensations. This is a way to ground ourselves and be present. With this self-awareness, we can better decide next steps in caring for our mental well-being. This activity is particularly useful in shifting your focus from distractions, that may be created by your mind or coming from your physical surroundings, to listening in and being self-aware. This is an important step to in listening in to ourselves and then choosing how we wish to act next to care for our needs. We hope you find this activity helpful with prioritizing your self-care needs. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We are pleased to bring to you a series of videos created by My Deaf Therapy! Transcript: Hello, Beautiful people. My name is Tempest Cooper, and I was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. On my father's side, I am Jamaican. I earned my Master's degree from Gallaudet University. I have been working in the mental health field for about 10 years, and I have held my ACSW for 2.5 years. I am close to completing my certification to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Some of the therapeutic approaches I use include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Play Therapy, Role-Playing, and other varied techniques. I am passionate about empowering the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, and I want to normalize the idea that seeing a therapist is okay. There is nothing wrong with seeking help. It does not mean you are "crazy." Let’s work to remove that stigma. Your mental health is our top priority. Self-care is important, and I am committed to helping individuals develop and maintain their well-being. It brings me great joy to see my clients accomplish their goals and dreams. Meet Your Therapist: Jamie Chapin
I am Jamie and I identify as a Deaf white cisgender female. I use the pronouns she/hers. I also identify as a pansexual queer. As I reflect on my journey as a therapist, working with various people and at various places I’ve come to realize that I’ve evolved throughout time. I acknowledge I am a non-traditional therapist and my focus is on each and every individual, their unique journey and providing support in understanding who they are. I believe that we are multi-dimensional human beings and that we are also a lot like nature. While supporting you on your journey alongside, I am not here to tell you what I think, tell you what you should do, nor to fix you. I am here to support you in finding your voice, understanding of your inner world and to find your authenitc Self. I value the mind, body and spirit as it is interconnected. It also helps us explore our parts that come up that feel they need to take control for us. This is where we can figure out how to find our authentic Self and allow that to take lead and then our parts will follow once they acknowledge they trust us to take charge. I am honored to be able to provide support throughout your journey and cheering you alongside every step of the way until you reach the feeling of home. I am also honored to be part of your space providing safety and healing as it starts to feel right for you while celebrating that with you. I look forward to connecting with you.

Grew up with Alcoholic Parents or Caregivers?
IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A white woman with shoulder length brown hair is wearing a black 3/4-length sleeve shirt with white and gold dots. She is standing in front of a brown background and signing in ASL. Do you identify as an adult child of an alcoholic (ACOA)? Here are some common behavior traits if you have one or more parent in your home who is an alcoholic: 1- You struggle with alcohol. 2- Solving conflicts or fights in your relationships (both romantic and friendships) feels tough. You may show anxiety or avoidant behaviors. For example, you avoid conflict by brushing it under the rug. This stems from your relationship with an alcoholic parent, you avoid angering that parent. 3- You constantly feel guilty. As a child, you may feel guilty and if you misbehave, it’ll lead to consequences and your parent will drink. 4 - You find it difficult to trust other people. With an alcoholic parent, you were most likely self-reliant, this affects your relationships as an adult because it was ingrained to not trust people to support you. 5- You feel different from other people because of your dysfunctional family. Oftentimes children of an alcoholic parent feel like they are hiding a secret and don’t invite their friends to their home out of shame. If you know of a loved one who identifies with the 5 traits, it’s important to show compassion, be willing to listen, have patience, and reassure your loved one’s value to you. Also, “fixing” is not your responsibility, be compassionate but also encourage your loved one to seek treatment. https://www.sardiprogram.com/dodameetings/

Leaving a Domestic Violence Relationship: Easier Said than Done
Contrary to the typical media portrayal of relationships as fairy tales and bouquets of flowers, relationships are a lot more like full-time jobs. When Separation Heals a Marriage
Contrary to the typical media portrayal of relationships as fairy tales and bouquets of flowers, relationships are a lot more like full-time jobs. Enabling: When Helping Isn’t Helping
Enabling is when your “help” can actually hurt someone. The concept is most often used related to addiction. It applies to many unhealthy behaviors, however, such an adult child living rent-free in a parent’s house, never saving money, spending it all on clothes and travel. Stopping enabling someone you love can be easier said than done. It’s a struggle between compassion and the fear of watching them fall. Thank you, Clyde, for keeping it real about enabling. Announcement of our first Reading Circle for The Giving Cypress Foundation
You may remember seeing a viral video about Decolonizing Healing. And shortly after, you may have learned about a new nonprofit devoted to making healing more accessible. Now, we’re excited to announce our first official program—one that is both a fundraiser and an action in becoming better relatives. We’re gathering for a Reading Circle designed to help us unpack together, reconnect with our earth-honoring ancestors, and practice healing in relationship. We’ve been generously blessed by @hilarygiovaleauthor to proceed with this Reading Circle grounded in Becoming a Good Relative. ✨ Here’s How It Works Participants have multiple ways to support this fundraiser, based on access and capacity: 🌿 Option 1: Buy the Book Purchase Becoming a Good Relative. Proceeds support The Giving Cypress Foundation (TGCF) and broader decolonizing efforts connected to the book. 🍵 Option 2: Buy the Book + Tea Support TGCF and a BIPOC Deaf–owned herbal business with a package that includes Kindred Spirit Chai from Bouquet of Basil Herbals. 🌲 Option 3: Full Package — Book + Tea + Session Includes the book, chai, and a virtual Forest Bathing session as a relational healing practice. All options include access to the trauma-informed Reading Circle—a facilitated space centered on care, reflection, and collective meaning-making. 📖 Reading Circle Details 🗓 Sunday, January 25 ⏰ 7:00 PM EST / 5:00 PM MST 🤝 Co-Facilitators Lourdes Valenzuela & Summer Crider • Summer will open the circle with introductions and translation support • Lourdes will guide discussion questions • Lourdes will lead an Ancestor Altar activity as a grounding practice This Reading Circle is not just about reading a book. It’s about becoming better relatives—to one another, to our ancestors, to the land, and to those who come after us. Thank you for supporting TGCF and choosing care in how we gather. 🌲 🔗 https://givebutter.com/TwYdcY

ReCap of our Sea Turtle Immersion
Last weekend, we gathered for our Sea Turtle Immersion — a magical 4 days of slowing down, letting go of time, and rediscovering our connection to Nature, community, and ourselves. 🌿💧 ………. We played in the forest, shared stories under the trees, and even went on a forest bathing kayaking excursion with @earthkinship — feeling the rhythm of the water and the heartbeat of the Earth. 🌊✨ ……… This is just the beginning of our 6-month Nature & Forest Therapy Guide Training journey with @natureandforesttherapy. We’ll be going virtual for the remainder of the training and then gather again in 6 months to celebrate our growth, our shared healing, and our collective rise — like sea turtles returning to the shore together. 💚 Here’s a glimpse of our time together. #SeaTurtleCohort #NatureAndForestTherapy #ForestBathing #ANFT #DeafCommunity #ForestTherapy #EarthKinship #NatureHeals #CollectiveHealing #ForestFamily #naturetherapy [video description: Hands come together to form a heart, in the middle is a icon of a sea turtle. Next shows a bird eye view of the new guides in a circle signing “sea turtle”, the drone zooms in and out. On the sides are different glimpses of the weekend- participants engaging in activities, watching a performance, kayaking at sunset, and connecting with Nature. The last video shows everyone in the circle smiling, waving, and ILY to the camera]

Testimonials from Luna Moth Cohort about Nature & Forest Therapy Immersions
🌿 The Power of Shared Experiences 🌿 "Training with a group of Deaf signers, I felt I could relax. There was an immediate understanding, having navigated similar experiences. I didn’t feel like I had to explain myself. They already understood!" – Kali Nature Therapy creates a space where we can connect deeply with ourselves and the natural world—without language barriers. If you’re Deaf and love nature, Forest and Nature Therapy immersions are all about connecting with a community of like-minded individuals. You won’t get that experience anywhere else. Meredith, a now certified guide and professor of Disability Studies, shares: "I felt surprised [by everyone's trust and vulnerability] and was able to just breathe in and out. I can trust the forest and the people here." Susan reflects: "Nature is full of spirit. That truth hit me, inspiring me and allowing me to see my own spirit as a seed. I began to see my beauty and the beauty of the nature and people around me." Kali, now a certified ANFT guide and Eco Art Therapist, shares: "Many people in the Deaf community experience language deprivation. Using art and nature can help develop their ability to creatively express themselves without limit." Could you be next? Mental Health Crisis In Deaf Community (World Mental Health Day) | Rikki Poynter
https://betterhelp.com/rikki Mental Health Problem In The Deaf Community (World Mental Health Day) | Rikki Poynter Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subrikki | Patreon: http://patreon.com/rikkipoynter Previous video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=GepxPgeqyYo&list=PLa2HGeuqKyQ119f65O7Gd0ThCj9XWmV62&playnext=1&index=2 #ad #worldmentalhealthday This video is sponsored by BetterHelp, a service I have used twice in the past. My opinions on the matter are 100% honest and genuine. The link above is not a commission link and I make no money from it. OTHER VIDEOS I'VE DONE ON BETTERHELP BEFORE THIS SPONSORSHIP: - https://youtu.be/2tHhJXZvl7w As a mentally ill deaf person, I finally decided to try to get some help about a year ago. I looked high and low for accessible therapists. When I looked for therapists who knew American Sign Language, I found a few, but they were too far of a drive from me. I tried to find therapists who would book American Sign Language interpreters, but they told me that I would have to pay for them myself. When I asked if they would then accommodate via writing/typing, I didn't get much of a response. Mental illness is a serious problem for deaf people, whether it's mainstreamed deaf or culturally deaf. It's a topic that seems to not be talked about often, which is a shame because we are so prone to it because of the oppression we face on a regular basis. The lack of accessible therapy does not help. Thankfully, BetterHelp is a (not the ultimate, but at least one) option that can be suitable for a percentage of deaf people. This is because you can use instant messaging, texting (in the chat), etc. to receive sessions. So far, it has worked for me when nothing else will. I would still love to be able to find a more face-to-face solution, but until then, something like BetterHelp works for me. If you do find yourself in a emergency crisis, consider texting 741-741 to Crisis Text Line.
